US 30-year yields touched their highest level since 2007, Canadian borrowing costs reached their highest since 2009, and the S&P 500 fell for a third straight session with a US semiconductor gauge down 5%. The 10-year sits at 4.686% after slipping two basis points ahead of FOMC minutes. The transmission has shifted: the AI complex, not housing or credit, is now the main casualty of higher discount rates, and Alphabet’s record A$5.5bn Australian bond priced at just under 7% supplies a hard number for the cost of financing AI infrastructure. ECB economists separately warned that an AI-driven equity bubble poses systemic risk to eurozone financial stability. Rates risk and equity concentration risk are running through one mechanism.

Three new items sit outside the rates story. The SEC proposed its first major crypto framework, with a one-time $5M startup exemption and a $75M-per-12-month fundraising exemption. Moderna and Merck reported positive late-stage melanoma data for an individualized mRNA vaccine plus Keytruda, and Moderna roughly doubled. And Trump paused the scheduled 50% tariffs on roughly $20bn of Canadian goods for three days, announcing a deal with Ottawa (CNBC) — a reprieve short enough that cross-border supply chains cannot yet re-plan around it.

New Developments

The AI trade is repricing on the cost of capital, not on demand

Samsung and SK Hynix each fell about 7% after the US chip gauge dropped 5%. The mechanism is arithmetic: earnings weighted far into the future lose the most present value when long real yields rise, and AI-infrastructure names carry the longest duration in the equity market. Alphabet’s debut kangaroo bond, its highest-ever coupon at just under 7% and the largest corporate bond sale in Australian history, and Anthropic’s pre-IPO credit facility set to exceed $10bn show where the incremental funding is coming from. Debt-funded capex at a 7% cost demands a higher project return than equity-funded capex did at 2021 rates.

Two pieces of evidence cut against a demand-driven interpretation. Analog Devices beat expectations on strong data-center and industrial chip sales, and Anthropic is raising more capital rather than less. That points to a valuation correction rather than an order-book deterioration. Treat the ECB warning as a forecast by central bank economists, not hard data.

Hyperscaler debt issuance adds duration supply at exactly the moment sovereign supply is already clearing at higher yields. That is a self-reinforcing loop while it lasts. It breaks if AI capex guidance is cut, which would relieve rates and hurt the semiconductor supply chain simultaneously.

SEC writes crypto rules without Congress

The SEC’s “Regulation Crypto Assets” proposal is an implemented agency action with an explicit mechanism: exempt paths at $5M one-time and $75M per 12 months remove the main legal deterrent to US token issuance. The agency moved while the CLARITY Act stalled in the Senate, and reporting notes lawmakers have limited working days before the October election break. Regulatory clarity by rulemaking is more reversible than clarity by statute, which is the reason to treat this as a fee-pool expansion for regulated intermediaries rather than a durable structural change. Citi’s plan to custody bitcoin alongside stocks and bonds on its existing Investor Services platform points the same direction on institutional plumbing. The proposal is a comment-stage rule, so realized revenue effects are 2027 events at the earliest.

First late-stage win for individualized mRNA oncology

The Moderna-Merck regimen significantly extended recurrence-free survival in melanoma against Keytruda alone. Three outlets report the same company-released trial result, which is coverage breadth rather than independent verification of the data. For Merck, combination use extends the economic life of its largest franchise. For Moderna, it converts a platform narrative into a clinical result. The unresolved variable is manufacturing and payer economics for a bespoke per-patient product, which could cap revenue well below the implied re-rating. Second-order: a validated neoantigen platform raises the strategic value of comparable assets to large pharma facing patent expirations.

Developing Themes

Hormuz remains physically shut. Iran states the strait stays closed until the US meets interim-deal conditions, Trump confirmed no talks are scheduled, Reuters reports transit traffic slowing and oil at a three-week high, Brent above $91 and WTI near $85. Two escalation increments today: the UAE suspended trade with Iran after alleging missile fire at the Gulf state, and FT reports Tehran insiders discussing retaliation against US assets in Europe. Diesel remains where the physical tightness bites, with buyers competing for a shrinking pool amid Russian and Middle East disruptions. Cutting the UAE corridor raises the probability Iran escalates rather than concedes.

Housing weakened again. Existing home sales fell 1.7% m/m to a 4.06mn annual rate with the median at a near-record $434,100; housing starts are down 13.5% y/y; weekly mortgage volume remains below year-ago levels with rates turning higher. Lowe’s guided cautiously on home-improvement spending. Target, by contrast, beat and raised guidance helped by a tariff refund. The consumer is not broadly rolling over; the housing-linked consumer is.

Fed path. July minutes are due with three members having backed a hike. Kalshi puts September at roughly 72% no change and 29% for a 25bp hike, with cuts at 1%. Easing is functionally out of the near-term distribution, which is the operative fact for equity discounting. Note the divergence: markets price a 54% chance of a hike by December 2026, so the bond selloff is not primarily a policy-rate story.

Continuing Themes

Long-end supply and term premium remain the dominant driver, with recent auctions clearing adequately but only at higher yields (Aug 13 30-year at 5.216%, 2.39 bid-to-cover, 9.2% dealer take). Gold fell as much as 1.5% to $4,351.80 as yields and the dollar rose, with managed money still crowded long at 34.4% of open interest.

What to Watch

Long-Dated Yields Hit Multi-Decade Highs as Global Sovereign Selloff Deepens

US 30-year Treasury yields touched their highest level since 2007 and Canadian yields their highest since 2009 as a global sovereign bond selloff deepened, with the 10-year at 4.686% after a small pullback ahead of FOMC minutes.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Discount rates rise for long-duration equities, driving a third consecutive S&P 500 decline and hitting the highest-multiple AI and semiconductor names hardest.

  • Mortgage and corporate borrowing costs reprice higher immediately, extending the contraction in housing credit demand.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Term premium rather than policy expectations is doing the work, so a Fed hold no longer relieves the long end and traditional 60/40 hedging fails when stocks and bonds fall together.

  • Speculative accounts are already heavily net short 10-year and 2-year futures, so any inflation downside surprise could force a violent short-covering rally in duration.

TICKERS

  • ⚪ TLT — Long-duration Treasury ETF at $81.66 is the direct expression of the 19-year high in 30-year yields, with crowded futures shorts creating two-sided risk.

  • 🟢 CME — Record rate-market volatility and repositioning across the curve raise interest-rate futures and options volumes.

  • 🔴 XHB — Homebuilder complex is directly exposed to mortgage rates tracking the long end higher into weak existing-sales data.

AI Complex Corrects Third Session as ECB Warns on Bubble and Alphabet Pays ~7% for AI Debt

A US semiconductor gauge fell 5% and Samsung and SK Hynix dropped about 7%, while ECB economists warned an AI-driven equity bubble poses eurozone financial-stability risks and Alphabet priced a record A$5.5bn Australian bond at just under 7%, its highest-ever coupon.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Memory and AI-infrastructure equities de-rate as investors mark down the present value of capex-funded future earnings at higher discount rates.

  • Hyperscaler financing costs are now observable at roughly 7% for long-dated debt, raising the hurdle rate on data-center projects.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • AI capital formation is itself a source of duration supply, linking equity concentration risk and rates risk through one mechanism instead of two.

  • If credit rather than equity becomes the marginal funder of AI capex, deterioration in high-yield and private-credit conditions would transmit to chip order books with a lag.

TICKERS

  • 🔴 MU — Memory pricing and AI capex expectations are the direct driver of the semiconductor gauge’s 5% drop that pulled Samsung and SK Hynix down about 7%.

  • ⚪ GOOGL — Record A$5.5bn bond priced near 7% shows funding market depth but a materially higher cost of capital for its AI buildout.

  • ⚪ ADI — Analog Devices beat on data-center and industrial chip sales, evidence the demand deterioration is valuation-led rather than order-led so far.

Hormuz Stays Shut, UAE Severs Iran Trade, Brent Above $91

Iran said the Strait of Hormuz remains closed until the US meets interim-deal conditions and Trump confirmed no talks are scheduled; oil hit a three-week high with traffic slowing, the UAE suspended trade with Iran after alleged missile fire, and diesel buyers are competing for a shrinking supply pool.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Brent above $91 and WTI near $85 with reduced Hormuz transit sustain a physical-availability premium rather than a pure fear premium.

  • Distillate tightness from Russian and Middle East disruptions raises freight, agricultural and industrial cost bases into winter.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • The UAE cutting a large trade and financial corridor with Iran raises the odds Tehran escalates rather than concedes, and Iranian discussion of European targets widens the geography of the risk premium.

  • Energy-led inflation keeps the Fed from easing even as housing and consumer data soften, which is the main reason long-end real yields keep rising.

TICKERS

  • 🟢 VLO — Complex US refining capacity captures a widening distillate crack directly as buyers compete for a shrinking diesel pool.

  • 🟢 XOM — Non-Gulf integrated production benefits from sustained $90+ crude with limited direct Hormuz asset exposure.

  • ⚪ FRO — Rerouting and war-risk premia around Hormuz raise ton-miles and tanker earnings.

SEC Proposes ‘Regulation Crypto Assets’ With Exemptions Up to $75M

The SEC proposed a tailored crypto framework creating a one-time $5M startup exemption and a $75M-per-12-month fundraising exemption, its first major crypto rulemaking, advanced while the CLARITY Act remains stalled in the Senate.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • US token issuance gains a defined exempt path, lowering legal cost for domestic primary issuance and listing decisions.

  • Regulated exchanges and brokers gain clearer grounds to list token products, expanding fee-bearing product shelves.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Rulemaking by agency rather than statute leaves the framework vulnerable to reversal by a future commission or litigation, so capital commitments should lag the headline.

  • A cheaper exempt fundraising channel competes with venture equity for early-stage AI and fintech capital at the margin.

TICKERS

  • 🟢 COIN — A defined exempt issuance path expands listable assets and primary-market services for the largest US exchange.

  • ⚪ HOOD — Retail-facing token distribution becomes easier to expand under a tailored exemption regime.

  • ⚪ C — Citi’s plan to custody bitcoin on its Custody+ platform aligns with regulatory clarification of digital-asset securities.

Moderna-Merck mRNA Melanoma Vaccine Hits in Late-Stage Trial; Moderna Doubles

The Moderna-Merck individualized mRNA cancer vaccine paired with Keytruda significantly extended recurrence-free survival versus Keytruda alone in late-stage melanoma data, and Moderna shares roughly doubled.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • First late-stage validation of individualized mRNA oncology re-rates Moderna’s platform and extends the commercial life of Merck’s Keytruda franchise into combination therapy.

  • Manufacturing demand rises for personalized mRNA batch production, sequencing and cold-chain capacity.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • A working platform raises the acquisition value of mRNA and neoantigen assets for large pharma facing patent cliffs, supporting biotech M&A.

  • Payer and manufacturing economics of per-patient bespoke vaccines are unresolved and could cap realized revenue well below the implied re-rating.

TICKERS

  • 🟢 MRNA — Late-stage readout is company-specific hard evidence validating the core oncology platform.

  • 🟢 MRK — Combination benefit extends the Keytruda franchise as the base molecule loses exclusivity protection over time.

  • ⚪ TMO — Personalized mRNA production scales demand for bioprocessing tools and services.

Housing Weakens Further: Existing Sales -1.7% m/m, Mortgage Demand Below Year-Ago, Lowe’s Flags Pressure

July existing home sales fell 1.7% month-over-month with the median price near a record $434,100, weekly mortgage demand stalled with volume below year-ago levels as rates turned higher again, and Lowe’s guided cautiously citing pressure in home-improvement spending.

FIRST-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Transaction volumes fall while prices hold, compressing revenue for brokerages, title insurers and mortgage originators that earn on volume rather than price.

  • Home-improvement demand softens as turnover declines, confirmed in Lowe’s guidance.

SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS

  • Sticky near-record prices alongside falling volume keeps shelter inflation elevated, which delays the disinflation the long end needs to rally.

  • The same rate transmission is visible in Canada, where higher five-year yields threaten the housing recovery, indicating a synchronized rather than US-specific channel.

TICKERS

  • 🔴 LOW — Company guidance explicitly cites pressure in home-improvement spending as turnover falls.

  • 🔴 DHI — Volume-driven builder earnings face rising incentive costs as mortgage rates track the long end higher.

  • ⚪ TGT — Sales beat and raised guidance, aided by a tariff refund, show consumer weakness is concentrated in housing-linked categories rather than broad-based.

Options markets show a split verdict: SPY and QQQ remain calm while VGK, EWJ and EEM price imminent stress, and TLT’s contango with a 0.82 put/call ratio suggests the pain trade may be a duration rally rather than a further yield spike. Portfolio positioning includes a starter TLT long, an underweight in XHB, and a hold-not-add stance on AI infrastructure exposure tied to Alphabet’s near-7% bond coupon. The premium section unpacks these options signals alongside risk scenarios, including how a Hormuz reopening or an AI capex guidance cut could reverse the current cross-asset setup.
